Reminder: Save the Date for Connect & Assess!

This fall, all Kindergarten through 5th grade students will be invited to meet their new teacher and complete a brief learning assessment during a 30-minute Connect & Assess meeting on August 27 or 28. Families will find out the name of your child’s teacher in early August. At that time, you will also receive information about how to schedule the Connect & Assess appointment for your child(ren) using an online scheduling system. Instructions on how to make an appointment online will be emailed to parents and posted on your school’s website in early August. These Connect & Assess meetings will take place on August 27 and 28, and will replace the regular “back-to-school night” activity. Daytime and limited evening appointments will be available. What is Connect & Assess? Students and their parents/guardians will have the opportunity to connect one-on-one with their child’s teacher and meet other school staff. PRMS science teacher, Nina Kirkman, named Teacher of the Year

Nina Kirkman was named the 2019 Teacher of the Year at the District 112 Foundation Excellence in Education Awards Banquet on April 28. Kirkman is a 7th grade science teacher at Pioneer Ridge Middle School. Although she’s a science teacher, she incorporates music, poetry, and other forms of learning to help bring the subject alive for her students. Kirkman also helps build a stronger school community through implementation and facilitation of the Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) program. This middle school transition program where 8th graders serve as mentors and work with 6th graders to help them feel comfortable in their new school environment. Her colleagues have identified her as a district-wide leader, helping other teachers while keeping a “kid lens” on curriculum writing and development. Her passion for science is infectious, and her students praise her ability to connect with them both in and out of the classroom, helping them achieve more than they think is possible. Read more... Edie Stearns named district Teacher of the Year

rsz_teacher_of_year (1)Edie Stearns wanted to be a teacher since she was a young girl.  Twenty-five years ago her dream became reality when she started as an intern at Chanhassen Elementary School in a 1st grade classroom with teachers Carol Berg and Peggy Kaufhold. She has also spent time teaching elementary students at Bluff Creek and, for the past six years, at Chaska Elementary teaching multi-age (4th/5th) language arts, math and science. “Edie is a gift to everyone she encounters!” says Chaska Elementary Principal June Johnson.  “Her intuitive sense of what students need and her passion to help them succeed is evident in all she does. Whether you’re a current or past student, family member or teammate, you’ll feel the deep caring and compassion Edie brings to education each and every day.” As a leader among her peers, Stearns has been very involved in writing elementary language arts curriculum for the district and piloting innovative teaching tools like Chromebooks and Empower. Zanner Rowe named nation's best history teacher

Jenny Zanner Rowe, who teaches social studies at Chanhassen High School, received the prestigious Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award. This honor is bestowed on only one high school and one middle school teacher in the nation.  She is the first teacher in Minnesota to win the award.  Zanner Row was eligible for the national award after winning top honors for Minnesota. The national honor, which comes with a $10,000 award, recognizes outstanding commitment to student development, creativity and inspiring students to engage with history. “The finest teachers I know are History Day teachers and media specialists, so this is an incredible honor for me,” said Zanner Rowe.  “Connie Nuss (Media Specialist) was critical in helping me get the program off the ground at Chanhassen High School.” Zanner Rowe currently teaches AP Human Geography and Sociology.
