Amity International Teacher Program
La Academia is very fortunate to be able to host intern teachers through Amity International. Our amazing interns spend one school year with us and serve as Spanish language models for our young learners, while also sharing their culture with our entire school community. They offer a unique perspective, helping to further La Academia's mission to provide cultural immersion, not simply language acquisition.
The PTO at La Academia has pledged long-term support for the Amity program as an investment into our school. As such, we allocate funds each year not only to support this program, but to help it grow.
In order to maintain this program, we need plenty of volunteers. Each intern stays with two host families throughout their stay. Those families provide room and board, a private bedroom, and three meals a day. Buddy families help with transportation, excursions, and other cultural experiences.

Amity Host Family FAQs
Host families play a vital role in the success of an assignment. By welcoming an intern from another country into their home, volunteer host families gain friendship, understanding, knowledge and a connection to the world. They will experience new tastes and customs, and have the chance to practice their intern’s language. Their children will learn about different parts of the world from the intern, and may receive extra help with their own language studies.
Long-lasting relationships that may develop between the family and intern can lead to an ongoing exchange of friendship and hospitality. Children may also benefit from having an international friend and a foreign pen pal. Learning about another culture may create new interests in travel and international issues. Hosts may also gain a new perspective of Americans and American culture as seen through the intern’s eyes, leading, perhaps, to broadening their own opinions, beliefs and values
The Host Family is the intern’s substitute family and an essential part of his or her assignment. Particularly in the early weeks, the Host will help the intern feel at home and soothe any feelings of homesickness. Most participants look forward to a genuine family living experience; they want to be included in family life and feel that you take interest in them.
